Polling and the Elections
Welcome back everyone to Politics Explained! We hope you’re having a good start to the school year and/or a good Fall. If you are new here, we post weekly blogs about what’s happening in politics. This week we had lots of build up towards Election Day, including new polls coming out and Donald Trump’s former Pentagon chief calling him a Fascist. Let’s get right into it!
The final poll of the popular vote by The New York Times and Sierra College before the election shows that Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump are tied at 48% each. This is a really important statistic because in recent years the Democrats have had a slight edge in the popular vote even when losing the election. Some key points that have made both candidates better are Trump’s immigration policies, which have helped him gain more traction among voters, while Harris has a big lead on the topic of abortion. Both issues are extremely important in this election and maybe deciding factors of who we see in the White House on January 20th. Along with immigration and abortion, another very important issue is the economy – Harris focuses on lower taxes for the middle class, while Trump wants to lower taxes for the wealthy, although Trump has now pivoted to suggesting getting rid of income taxes for everyone.
Trump’s former Pentagon chief and head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Mark Milley, said that Trump was “Fascist* to the core” and “the most dangerous person in this country” this week. Over 24 former Trump staffers or people close to him have turned against him publicly in recent weeks.
Lastly, if you are 18 or older, please get out and VOTE! Voting is the most important way to show your voice in our country. Who you vote for is up to you, but your vote is important, not just your vote for President, but for the House of Representatives and Senate, your state officials, and your local officials.
