A Presidential Party & Trump’s Tribulations

Welcome back to another week of Politics Explained! If you’re new here, we post non-partisan concise weekly blogs about the happenings on Capitol Hill. This week we’re covering a summit of presidents in New York, Trump’s legal troubles and some quick recaps on other events from this past week. Let’s get started!

This past Thursday, Biden and his campaign hosted a fundraiser which included appearances from former presidents Barack Obama and Bill Clinton. In an event which included 5000 donors, $25 million was raised, adding to the funding advantage that Biden has had over Trump. The event also included celebrity appearances of comedian and actress Mindy Kaling who roasted Biden and the former presidents, and late-night show host Stephen Colbert who interviewed them. Throughout the event Clinton and Obama showed their support of President Biden and praised the work his administration has been able to accomplish. On the Republican side of things, Trump attended a wake for a New York City police officer who was killed during a traffic stop this past Monday. The difference between the activities of the two presidential candidates is being utilized by the Trump campaign to draw contrast with Biden’s glamorous night with donors, yet it also exposes the lack of Republican unity as Trump seems to be without much support from his party compared to Biden.

Another struggle that Trump faces has to do with all of the time he’s recently spent in court. On Monday, Trump was given a reprieve* when a New York appeals court agreed to hold off on collecting the more than $454 million he owes following a civil fraud judgment if he puts up $175 million within 10 days. With the demand for Trump to pay these large sums of money, he’s turned to some interesting business ventures. One of them was "The Never Surrender High-Top Sneaker," an all-gold shoe with a glorious “T” and American flag design on the sides, all for the low low price of $399. Check them out here. However, his most recent venture is a little different and has involved him yet again with the Bible. Trump is now selling $60 “God Bless the USA Bibles,” featuring an American flag and the words “God Bless the USA” on the cover. On the inside, we’re not only presented with the Old and New Testaments, but also with the Pledge of Allegiance, the Declaration of Independence, and other historic documents. These Bibles have drawn criticism from all over, and continue Trump’s long-lasting history of making more than questionable decisions. Check out one of these Bibles here if you wish.

Quick Recaps:

  • The collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, MD has raised concerns over American infrastructure

  • U.S. aid to Ukraine is crucial to keeping China from being a threat to Taiwan, a Taiwanese diplomat says

  • House Republicans are demanding a full impeachment trial of Alejandro Mayorkas, the Secretary of Homeland Security

Definition of the Week (Reprieve): a cancellation or postponement of a punishment.
